Human Trafficking Prevention Month

Greetings from NAPNAP Partners/The Alliance for Children in Trafficking

January is Human Trafficking Prevention Month and today, Jan. 11, is Human Trafficking Awareness Day. NAPNAP Partners and its Alliance for Children in Trafficking initiative have come a long way since our formation in 2017, training more than 12,000 health care providers to date. As we look ahead to 2022, we prepare ourselves for the work still to do. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, which has led to increases in social isolation and anxiety among teens, combined with a rise in social media usage puts children in the U.S. at risk. We offer you these education opportunities, tools and resources to help you protect vulnerable children. Learn more on our Human Trafficking Prevention Month page.

Earn CE and Learn How to Help Prevent Trafficking

3-PARRT – Providers Assessing Risk and Responding to Trafficking: 3-PARRT is a comprehensive, on-demand, three-course continuing education curriculum on child trafficking for nurse practitioners and nurses. NAPNAP continuing education credits are available for all modules, and each course offers 1.0-1.5 CE contact hours. All courses are available on PedsCESM.

ACT Advocates Program

ACT advocates are health care providers who, after completing a specifically designed human trafficking training curriculum, conduct grassroots education sessions for their peers at hospitals, clinics and primary care offices, local/state conferences and events, and for schools, community groups, faith-based organizations, youth groups, and others. Learn more about how you can become an ACT advocate or request an advocate speaker by going to our ACT Advocates Program page.

Tools and Resources

Core Competencies and Other Provider/Public Resources

In 2021, the Department of Health and Human Services' Office on Trafficking in Persons (OTIP) released its new Core Competencies for Human Trafficking Response in Health Care and Behavioral Health Systems resource. NAPNAP Partners was pleased to have participated in the development and review of this critical publication.

These core competencies highlight skill sets for health care professionals to identify, respond to and serve individuals who have experienced or are at risk of forced labor and sexual exploitation. You can download the Core Competencies and find other important resources on our website.

ACT Update

2021 Highlights

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic forced NAPNAP Partners to change its training methods from in-person to online. Trained ACT Advocates reached hundreds of their peers virtually throughout 2021. As part of its 2021 Human Trafficking Prevention Month activities, ACT conducted a virtual train the trainer program, which was attended by 50 participants. You can watch a recording of this training on NAPNAP’s PedsCESM.

Also in January 2021, ACT Chair Brenda Cassidy led a TeamPeds Experts Live on Facebook. Although online connections help youth with sense of belonging, social media platforms allow perpetrators to target, recruit and groom unsuspecting children/teens. A surge in technology and the pandemic have exposed this issue resulting in a significant rise in reported cases in 2021. Human trafficking, harassment, solicitation of sexual abuse material (pornography), online enticement, live streaming abuse and sextortion are types of online trafficking that we must address through prevention, early identification and response and support for survivors. You can watch a recording of Brenda’s presentation on our Human Trafficking Prevention Month page.

We would like to thank Tresa Zielinski, the first president of NAPNAP Partners, for her tireless work on the Alliance for Children initiative. Dr. Zielinski stepped down as chair in 2021 and Brenda Cassidy stepped into the chair role. In late 2021, ACT restructured its leadership to create an ACT Champions leadership team.

Meet ACT Champions

Partners and ACT have big plans in 2022, including expanding our outreach to children, families and community leaders and publishing our first formal position statement. The Alliance for Children in Trafficking would be nowhere without the leadership of ACT Chair Dr. Brenda Cassidy, Co-chair Shenoa Jamieson, and our Champions Katelyn Brown, Geraldine Fitzgerald and Jason Spees. Read more about these dedicated volunteers on our ACT Champions page.
