Human Trafficking Prevention Month

Greetings from NAPNAP Partners/The Alliance for Children in Trafficking

January is Human Trafficking Prevention Month. NAPNAP Partners and its Alliance for Children in Trafficking (ACT) initiative have come a long way since our formation in 2017, training nearly 13,000 health care professionals to date. As we look ahead to 2023, we are excited to announce updates to NAPNAP’s PedsCESM on-demand continuing education course on human trafficking in minors and young adults and the train-the-trainer program for ACT Advocates. Social determinants of health, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and a combined rise in social media usage put any child, adolescent, or young adult in the U.S. at risk. We offer these educational opportunities, tools and resources to help you protect vulnerable youth. Learn more on our Human Trafficking Prevention Month page.

3-PARRT – Providers Assessing Risk and Responding to Trafficking

3-PARRT is a comprehensive, on-demand, three module continuing education course on human trafficking for health care professionals who work with children, adolescents and young adults. The modules are available with the most recent updates on the science, recognition and clinical approach to human trafficking in the clinical environment. Designed with a pediatric focus, this is a great course for any health care professional who wants to take a deeper leap into human trafficking. NAPNAP continuing education credits are available for all modules, and each one offers 1-1.5 nursing CE contact hours. All modules are available on PedsCESM.

ACT Advocates Program

ACT Advocates are health care professionals who, after completing our human trafficking curriculum, will be able to conduct grassroots education sessions for their colleagues at hospitals, clinics and primary care offices, local/state conferences and events, and for schools, community groups, faith-based organizations, youth groups, and others. Learn more about how to become an ACT Advocate or request an Advocate speaker for your organization by going to our ACT Advocates Program page. A health care professional can also attend the curriculum without going on to become a speaker.

Intensive Workshop at NAPNAP National Conference

If you’re going to be joining us in Orlando, Fla., at NAPNAP's 44th National Conference on Pediatric Health Care, be sure to sign up for our updated two-hour interactive workshop, Stop Human Trafficking in Your Community: Become an ACT Advocate, taking place on March 15. This lifesaving, innovative workshop and leadership opportunity is specifically developed for pediatric-focused nurse practitioners to learn about human trafficking, methods of identification, response and, most importantly, prevention.

Tools and Resources

International Advocacy

In 2022, the Alliance for Children in Trafficking leadership and champions collaborated with Dr. Jordan Greenbaum and the International Center for Missing and Exploited Children to peer review and suggest clinical edits to the second edition of a Human Trafficking Toolkit meant for health care providers who encounter human trafficking in the clinical environment. Meant for the international community, it provides an overview of human trafficking, a service assessment tool, guidance for improving health services, easily accessible resources and a template for building one’s own local resource guide.

ACT Update

2022 Highlights

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has continued to impact NAPNAP Partners training methods. Trained ACT advocates reached almost 1,000 health care professionals from a variety of professions through in-person and virtual trainings in 2022.

During 2022, the ACT champions leadership team worked diligently to update the ACT advocates presentation, training manual, the 3-PARRT training modules and expand our platform for communication and resources. Based on feedback we received from our current ACT advocate volunteers, we launched ACT Basecamp, a user-friendly resource for ACT advocates to stay connected and informed on resources, presentation opportunities and reports. A primary goal for 2023 is to reconnect with ACT advocates and re-establish an active training program. Other goals include expanding the ACT advocate role to members of the community who work with children, adolescents, and young adults with the intention of enacting prevention strategies for all youth.

ACT Champions

The Alliance for Children in Trafficking would be nowhere without the leadership of ACT Chair Dr. Brenda Cassidy, Co-chair Shenoa Jamieson, and our champions Katelyn Brown, Jason Spees and Geraldine Fitzgerald. Read more about these dedicated volunteers on our ACT Champions page
