Human Trafficking Prevention Month

Greetings from NAPNAP Partners/The Alliance for Children in Trafficking

January is Human Trafficking Prevention Month. NAPNAP Partners and its Alliance for Children in Trafficking (ACT) initiative have forged ahead since our formation in 2017, training more than 13,000 health care professionals to date. Social determinants of health, the COVID-19 pandemic, and a combined rise in social media usage put any child, adolescent or young adult in the U.S. at risk. We are excited to offer these educational opportunities, tools and resources to help you protect at-risk youth. Learn more on our Human Trafficking Prevention Month page.

Earn CE and Learn How to Help Prevent Trafficking

  • 3-PARRT is a comprehensive, on-demand, three module continuing education course on human trafficking for health care professionals who work with children, adolescents, and young adults. The modules are available with the most recent updates on the science, recognition and clinical approach to human trafficking. Designed with a pediatric focus, this is a great course for any health care professional who wants to take a deeper leap into human trafficking. NAPNAP continuing education credits are available for all modules, and each one offers 0.5-1 CE contact hours. All modules are available on PedsCESM.
  • ACT Advocates are health care professionals who, after completing our human trafficking curriculum, will be able to conduct grassroots education sessions for their colleagues in their own communities at hospitals, clinics and primary care offices, local/state conferences, and events, and for schools, community groups, faith-based organizations, youth groups and others. A health care professional can also attend the curriculum without going on to become a speaker. ACT leaders will provide ongoing support of our ACT Advocates through our new ACT Advocate Community using the Basecamp platform. Learn more about how to become an ACT Advocate or request an Advocate speaker for your organization.

Expanding ACT’s Reach

ACT Chair Joins Board of HEAL Trafficking

ACT Chair Jason Spees has been selected to serve on the board of HEAL Trafficking. HEAL is an integrated international network of more than 4,000 survivors and multidisciplinary professionals in 50 countries dedicated to ending human trafficking and supporting its survivors from a health perspective. They have a plethora of resources including webinars, research and educational online communities, consultants, and an annual two-day training for anti-trafficking educators. NAPNAP collaborated with HEAL Trafficking and the Office of Trafficking in Persons to form the Core Competencies, which is the national evidence-based standard for human trafficking education. Jason has also been featured with Dr. Jessica Peck in a TeamPeds Talk podcast titled "Child Trafficking in Foster Care."

O Canada

ACT leadership is collaborating with professionals in Canada to adapt the ACT Advocate presentation for Canadian health care professionals! If you know Canadian health care providers who could benefit, email Eileen Arnold-Ley at earnold@napnap.org.

Intensive Workshop at the International Association of Forensic Nurses Conference

The ACT leadership team launched a new and updated four-hour interactive intensive workshop, "Stop Human Trafficking in Your Community: Become an ACT Advocate," which we presented to more than 30 forensic nurses in Phoenix on Sept. 26, 2023. The workshop included an updated overview of the Alliance for Children in Trafficking, the ACT Advocate presentation and tips for presenting. This was followed by a small group discussion about simulation scenarios and an amazing survivor speaker panel.
